Legislative Update

Thank you for taking action through the Education For All Tennessee campaign and for joining in our vision of a Tennessee where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential through access to public education. Unfortunately, today, extreme lawmakers in the Tennessee General Assembly proved once again that they don’t share the same vision for Tennessee as you and I.

Today the House K-12 Subcommittee heard HB0793, the House version of the bill to allow school districts across the state to exclude children from public education based on their immigration status, and it passed in a 3-5 vote. As you know, this harmful, shortsighted legislation would not only strip thousands of Tennessee children from our public schools, but potentially millions of students across the US as it challenges long-standing protections and Supreme Court precedent.

But Tennesseans across race and place showed up ready to make sure our voices were heard, even if the lawmakers who are selling out our kids’ futures didn’t like our message. We flooded the room, held the line, and the committee was forced to adjourn for the day, which kept them from hearing other attempts to strip immigrant children of their right to education. And most importantly, we promised we’ll be back to keep holding them to account as they threaten the future of our children and our state.

The bill will now head to the full House Education Committee, and the Senate version will head to the Senate Finance Committee. Stay tuned for more information about when and where these committees will take place.

We have to keep the pressure up. Call or email your lawmaker again to let them know you don’t support these bills as they continue to pass through committee. And most importantly, share with five friends that you think will take action to protect all children’s right to a public education no matter who they are and where they were born.

We know our vision for Tennessee is bigger, bolder, and brighter than anything these lawmakers can imagine, and we will keep showing up to make sure they know we will never back down from protecting our freedoms, families, and future.
